Become an ASC Tutor
The instructor recommendation form must be signed by the appropriate course instructors from the subject areas you wish to tutor.
Recruitment Timeframe
The Tutoring Center has two recruitment periods every year:
- November-December for the following Spring semester
- April-July for the following Fall semester
Tutors are selected through a process based on qualifications, recommendations, and an interview with the ASC Faculty. Selected tutors will be expected to register for an online training course, INS 10/810 Peer Tutor and Mentor Training, which is a 12-week class offered in the spring and fall semesters.
Tutors are expected to act as role models for students by regularly attending their own classes, practicing successful study habits, and maintaining a positive learning attitude.
Closing Dates
- December 31 – for new tutors starting the following spring semester.
- July 31 – for new tutors starting the following fall semester.
Peer Tutor Position Description
Peer tutors provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to students in the Academic Support Center (ASC) located in the Student Engagement Center, Room SEC-154. They support students’ learning by reviewing class material, identifying learning difficulties, formulating ideas for papers, working on solutions to problems, and providing useful study skills to students who need supplemental help.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic support during assigned hours.
- Be punctual, use time effectively for academic tasks, and focus on students' needs.
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing any lecture notes, handouts, and/or textbooks.
- Exercise professional discretion at all times. Conversations with other staff should enhance tutoring skills and be conducted tactfully. Information about students should remain confidential within the Tutoring Center.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all tutoring sessions.
- Participate in outreach activities, such as presenting information regarding academic support programs.
- Attend ASC staff meetings and training workshops.
Qualifications
- A strong understanding of the subject/course you wish to tutor.
- Earned grade of a B or better in the class you will be tutoring, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and time management skills.
- Ability to serve as a role model for students seeking assistance.
- Obtain recommendations from at least two Mission College faculty in the subject area of interest.
- Commitment to working at least 8 hours per week.
Pay and Employment
Peer tutors are compensated according to the Student Worker Salary Schedule issued by the district Human Resources Office. The starting rate is $19.75 per hour for both individual and group tutoring. Job assignments may include tutoring in the Academic Support Center and/or embedded tutoring in a classroom setting.
Employment as a tutor does not guarantee a minimum number of work hours or continued employment.
