Tips for Success in Online Classes

Do Online Classes Fit You?
Ask yourself these questions to see if online learning is a good fit for you:
- Do you prefer working independently?
- Do you need convenience and an adjustable schedule?
- Are you comfortable asking for help and clarifications when needed?
- Are you good at meeting deadlines?
- Are you comfortable working with a computer?

Review the Syllabus: The syllabus is your roadmap for the course. Read it carefully, and don’t hesitate to ask your instructor if you need clarification.

Stay on Top of Canvas: Check Canvas regularly—at least twice a week—to keep up with assignments and announcements.

Engage and Communicate: Online learning is different from in-person classes. Stay active in discussions, and communicate often with your instructor and peers to fully understand the material.

Get Familiar with Canvas: Explore your course’s Canvas page to become comfortable with its layout. Each instructor customizes their course, so get to know the format.

Plan for Tech Issues: Technology can fail, but there are no excuses in online classes. Have a backup plan and try to complete assignments early in case issues arise.

How Much Time Do I Need?

You’ll need to commit at least three hours per week per unit of credit for each online class. For example, a three-unit class will require a minimum of nine hours per week. Be prepared to spend extra time if you don’t have the required prerequisites or English is your second language.
